Every grill owner knows that summer is peak grilling season. It’s the perfect time to get outdoors, eat good food, and spend quality time with your loved ones. Whether you’re flipping burgers and hot dogs or making a gooey s’more, the best way to enjoy the season is by keeping your grill clean all summer long.

Clean Your Gas Grill in 5 Easy Steps

Routinely cleaning your gas grill is a cheap and easy way to lengthen its lifespan, produce cost savings, and keep your family safe.

Here are the grill cleaning tools you need:

  • Durable grill brush (with no wire bristles)
  • Heavy-duty soap
  • Water
  • Plastic bucket
  • Old sponge

Ready to learn how to clean your grill like a pro? Check out our list of grill cleaning hacks:

1. Clean the Grill Grates

Wondering how to clean grill grates? We’ve got you covered.

  • Start by picking out a heavy-duty grill cleaning brush. Be sure to select one that doesn’t contain wire bristles, as they can fall off during use and cause serious harm if consumed.
  • Scrub the top side of the grates thoroughly with the grill brush. Grease, bits of food, and other gunk accumulate on the grates over time and need to be removed.
  • Remove the grill grates from the grill.
  • Repeat the same cleaning process on the bottom side.

2. Clean the Burner Protectors

Since the burner protectors shield the burner from all the grease and liquids that drip from the grates during the grilling process, it gets dirty pretty quickly. To clean the burner protectors, remove them from the grill and scrub them with an old sponge that’s been soaked in a soapy water mixture. Trust us when we say you’ll notice a clear difference in the burner protectors after cleaning them.

3. Clean the Burner

Even with the shield of the burner protectors, the burner still gets caked in grime. You have two options when cleaning the burner. You can either remove the component or leave them attached to the grill.

If you remove the burner, soak it in the bucket filled with soapy water as you did with the burner protectors. If you leave the burner attached to the grill, scrub it thoroughly with the soapy sponge you used in step #2.

4. Clean the Bottom of Your Grill

The metal sheets that rest at the bottom of your grill are the final destination for all the food, grease, and grime. To give these pieces a thorough clean, here’s what you need to do:

  • Pull the bottom plates out of the grill.
  • Use the grill brush to break up the caked-on grime. Don’t worry about getting every little bit. Just focus on the bigger chunks.
  • Scrape the loose pieces onto the tray underneath the metal plates, and discard them.
  • Re-insert the metal plates.

5. Clean the Exterior

Last but not least is cleaning your grill’s exterior. As an outdoor appliance, your grill collects everything from dirt to bird poop to pollen. To keep it looking good all summer long, you need to keep the exterior clean.  All you need to do is soak the sponge in the soapy water and scrub away.

How to Maintain Your Gas Grill

Maintaining your gas grill requires more than a thorough cleaning. If you want your grill to last for years to come, you have to take good care of it. Follow these three grill maintenance steps to keep your grill in tip-top shape.

    1. Check for Propane Tank Leaks

Here’s how you can check for propane leaks:

Pour soapy water on the gas line and connectors while the propane is turned on to see if any bubbles form. Bubble formation means either the connection needs to be secured or the gas line needs to be replaced. We recommend checking for propane tank leaks every month to keep your family safe.

      2. Keep It Covered

When your grill isn’t in use, keep a durable grill cover on it to protect the exterior from damage caused by the elements, dirt buildup, and rust.

        3. Clean It

How often you need to clean your grill depends on how often you use it. Grills generally get more use in the spring and summer, so you’ll need to clean yours more often during those months. Complete micro cleans after each use, and do a deep clean every few months.
